William John — English Violin Maker and Restorer
William John is a contemporary English violin maker and restorer, born in London in 1961. He has spent nearly five decades working with bowed string instruments, first as a restorer of important historical instruments and later as a maker of violins, violas and cellos in his own right. William John Violins
John entered the trade unusually young. In 1977, aged 16, he began work at Ealing Strings in London. He later recalled that, as a schoolboy interested in art and woodwork, he regularly passed the shop on his bicycle. After going inside out of curiosity, he was shown around the workshops and offered a short trial; he ultimately remained there for about fourteen years.
He began making his own violins, violas and cellos around 1980, while continuing restoration work. His instruments have generally followed classical Italian models, drawing especially on the Cremonese tradition that he encountered through restoration. Over the years he has made detailed drawings and notes from historic instruments and used this research as the basis for carefully executed copies intended for modern players.
