James W. Briggs (1855–1935) was an English-born violin maker, restorer and dealer who became an important figure in the Scottish violin-making tradition. After training in stringed-instrument making, he established his own business and later moved to Glasgow, where he built a strong reputation for the quality of his work.
Briggs produced violins, violas, cellos and double basses, often drawing inspiration from the great Italian makers, particularly Stradivari. His instruments were admired for their craftsmanship, attractive woods and warm varnish, and he received recognition at several exhibitions during his career. Today, his instruments remain sought after by musicians and collectors as fine examples of British violin making from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
