Description
Schönbach (now Luby), Bohemia, circa 1890
This attractive late nineteenth-century violin was made in Schönbach, the historic Bohemian town now known as Luby, one of Europe’s most important centres of violin making. By the end of the nineteenth century, Schönbach was home to hundreds of skilled craftsmen producing instruments that ranged from modest student violins to finely made examples distinguished by excellent workmanship and carefully selected tonewoods. Many of these instruments continue to offer exceptional value, combining traditional craftsmanship with mature, well-developed tonal qualities.
Dating from around 1890, this violin displays many of the features associated with the period, including the characteristic antiqued varnish popular with Schönbach makers of the era. The most striking feature is its beautiful one-piece maple back, displaying an unusually attractive, almost quilted figure that catches the light beautifully and gives the instrument considerable visual appeal.
With a 360mm back length, the violin follows a slightly longer pattern, contributing to a generous tonal output while remaining comfortable to play. Tonally, it has a bright, clean and focused voice, responding easily under the bow with excellent clarity and a lively, direct character. Professionally restored and expertly set up, it is presented in excellent playing condition and is ready to be enjoyed.
