Description
Neuner & Hornsteiner
Mittenwald, Germany, circa 1885–1895
Length of back: 357mm
This handsome violin is a fine example of the work of Neuner & Hornsteiner, one of the most respected workshops of nineteenth-century Mittenwald. Established by two of the town’s great violin-making families, the firm became renowned for producing instruments that combined traditional Bavarian craftsmanship with excellent consistency and musical performance. Today, their better instruments continue to be sought after by players for their warmth, reliability and distinctive Mittenwald character.
Dating from around 1885–1895, this violin displays the workshop’s characteristic internal construction, elegant modelling and rich dark red varnish laid over a warm golden ground. It is further distinguished by its finely carved lion’s head scroll, which unusually retains its original tongue—an attractive and increasingly uncommon survival.
The instrument has been professionally restored to a high standard and is presented in excellent playing condition. Tonally, it is everything one hopes for from a mature Mittenwald violin, with a broad, open and sonorous bass, a sweet, singing upper register and an easy, responsive feel under the bow. It possesses excellent projection while retaining warmth and refinement across all four strings.
The violin is fitted with quality rosewood fittings and is set up with Larsen Il Cannone G, D and A strings, complemented by a Warchal Amber E, a combination that enhances its depth, clarity and rich tonal colours.
An attractive and characterful Neuner & Hornsteiner with an outstanding setup and a distinctive lion’s head scroll, this is an instrument that will appeal equally to advancing musicians, professionals and collectors of fine Mittenwald violins.
