A fine and characterful English violin by John Marshall of London, dating from circa 1750–1760, representing the distinctive mid-18th-century London school of violin making.
Marshall worked in New Street, Covent Garden, during the 1750s and early 1760s and is particularly associated with instruments influenced by the work of Jacob Stainer. His violins are typically recognised for their pronounced yet well-balanced arching, strong craftsmanship and attractive golden to brown varnish.
