Sylvain Déplace was born in a musical family and studied the flute at the Strasbourg Conservatoire (France), where he was awarded a gold medal. He later gave up his university studies to follow his childhood dream : working with wood and particularly instruments of the violin family. He then met one of the great living French violin makers, Jean-Frédéric Schmidt in Lyon, who trained him for 3 years. At the end of his training, Sylvain moved to Canada with his family, where he continued learning and developing as a violin maker with Oliver Pérot. He finally went back home to Strasbourg in 2004, to open his own lutherie. He now works alongside amateur and professional players, and his instruments are enjoyed by players of international fame.
